In 1989, seventeen-year-old Darnnell joined the U.S. Army seeking escape from poverty and a path to education. Instead, she found herself deployed to Saudi Arabia as one of the few women attached to the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during Operation Desert Storm.
